I sell no Clivia before it's time

Clivia seedlings grow fast when properly cared for.  I normally release new seedlings for sale when they reach the 4-6 leaf stage, typically at 13-15 months from the date of sowing.  From sowing to first bloom (on a young 12-13 leaf plant) can be as short as 33 months, though 4-5 years is more common.

Photo to the right shows seedlings (cross X104) at 9.1/2 months from date of sowing.  Most are just 3 leaf, with the seedling at the right end having started the 4th leaf; this cross will be part of the release planned for September/October 2026.  X104 (photos below) is from Utopia Clivias seed, interesting flowers are 'in-between' picotee, ghost & pastel.

While breeders continually strive for improved flowers, these are seed grown plants, and variations/exceptions may occur.  Despite our best efforts, the sought after 'Near White' crosses often produce pale yellows instead, and multi-tepals do not always come through in the next generation.  However, buying only bloomed plants limits your options, since state of the art breeding is in South Africa, Japan & elsewhere.  International shipments (requiring an FDA import license) are both expensive and difficult; DHL seriously delayed our 2026 import of new parent plants, causing significant damage to the plants.

Please send inquiries to 973-495-4863 (text) or fairorchids@aol.com, and include shipping address ZIP code for estimation of shipping costs.

Prices listed below are for varying plant sizes; this does not mean that the specific cross is available in every size (initially only 4-6 leaf size is available; later all 4-6 leaf seedlings may have grown enough to advance to the 7-9 leaf stage).  Please inquire, including ZIP code for shipping estimate,  and I will advise you what the size options are for the specific crosses you are interested in, and estimate packing/shipping costs.    If you would like photos of the specific plants available for approval, please allow up to 7 days (longer during orchid show season = January to April).

Reference numbers:      X001, etc.  = A population of seedlings from the same parents.  Early crosses have 2 digits only.

#001           = Plant kept for breeding from that seedling group.  If more than 1, a numerical suffix is added (#001.1, #001.2, etc.).

LZ              = Rescue plant from the Lenny Zieff collection (both mature plants & offsets are available).

X018 = Selfing of a dwarf orange.  These plants are very compact, a few have shown a moderate green throat in the flowers.

   NBS (9-12 lf) in 2.1/2" pot . . . . . . . . . . .  $25.00

   BS (12+ lf) in 4.1/2" 'Quart' pot . . . . . .  $35.00

Yellow/Peach (Group ??) x Green (Group 1), the first plant will bloom in 2027, so we will finally learn the genetics of FO #008 (Grp 1 => yellow/green or Grp 2 => orange).

10-12 leaf plants in 'Quart' pot . . . . .    $60.00

Photo above is representative only.

X030 = (Multi-Tepal x self) purchased on Ebay a long time ago.  They are now (June 2026) in 9-11 leaf range, so some expectation that they will bloom spring 2027:

NBS (9-11 lf) in 4.1/2" 'Quart' pot . . . . .  $45.00

Akebono (Light of Buddha), orange flowers.  Plants are in 4.1/2" pots and 2-3 years from BS; prices are in $60-75 range depending upon size.

When I can find the time, I will list these individually with photos on the 'Division' page.

We expected yellows from X065.  Actual color indicates that the parents were probably Class 1 & Class 2 yellows respectively, and as such not compatible.   Giant flowers, unusual color & the suppressed yellow genes still make it attractive.

Available seedlings are blooming size (10 or 11 leaf, expected to bloom spring 2027), and currently growing in Quart pots:   $45.00 ea

In the seedling listings below, some crosses are plentiful (20 or more plants), while others are very limited.

  • If the 'sown date' is August or September, that indicates that the seed originated from South Africa.  While I typically order 10 or 20 seeds from each cross, many times only a smaller quantity is available (4-9 pcs).  I do not list any cross where I receive less than 4 seeds; eventually some of these small quantity crosses might show up on the 'Divisions' page.

  • Seed sown at other times of the year are from my own breeding, or seed purchased from NACS or Ebay.  While a full umbel can produce a lot of seed, in some cases I want to try more than one option, so I only pollinate 3-4 flowers with each variety of pollen.

Listings below cover seed shipments from 2024 (all in 'Quart' pot, with prices) and 2025 (all in 2.1/2" pot, prices to be added soon).  My 2023 seed shipment was ravaged by rodents, so only a few plants are available;  I am still sorting through these, and will list available plants later (probably on the 'Division' page. as most are singles).
